Exclusive economic zone

The UN Convention recognizes that a country has an exclusive right to survey and develop fisheries and mineral resources within a sea area extending up to 200 nautical miles (370 km) from its coast. It also makes the country responsible for resource and environmental management within the area (prevention of overexploitation, marine pollution and the like).

Although Japan ranks only sixty first in land area among the countries of the world, with a size of about 380 thousand km2, its exclusive economic zone of about 4.48 million km2 is sixth largest after those of the United States, France, Australia, Russia and Canada.
